Writing Center Work: Mapped

I'm trying to capture in a concept map the work that writing centers do. What am I missing? (Photo below links to larger one.)

Writing Centers

Under improving writing, I would add help students do/start their research. Then, would there be other information literacies that should also be added?

I would suggest a category for training tutors.

At Mizzou, the 1st yr MA students tutor in the writing lab rather than teach. As such, I think this creates some area of overlap with writing program administration. If we do strategy exchanges with tutors and teachers to help teachers write better assignments and help tutors better understand the goals of the assignment, I think the overall goal of improving undergraduate writing is enhanced/improved.

Something else that 1st yr MA tutors do is observe teachers. It could be another box under training tutors.

Then, I think there also needs to be a box for reflective tutoring. In a similar way that students write to learn, I think tutors need to be encouraged to write about their experiences. More formally, Mizzou has done this with an end-of-semester writing lab newsletter sent out across campus (which is also a way to market the program); however, I think more informal activities such as blogging and setting up a wiki would also be helpful.

Ok, I'll stop now. :)
